Yet without a bank, crumbling infrastructure, and suffering from severely polluted air, our community’s families lacked the amenities to support our aspirations.

In his two terms as the North Long Beach Councilmember, Rex Richardson pushed for access to educational and economic opportunities by:

• Opening the Michelle Obama Neighborhood Library and securing significant public infrastructure investments including the Houghton Park Community Center renovation and the Artesia Boulevard Bike Lanes

• Revitalizing North Long Beach and making it an attractive place for commerce by bringing the area’s first bank, attracting new retail and restaurants while ensuring longstanding mom and pop businesses continue to thrive

• Combatting homelessness by advocating to build Long Beach’s first municipal homeless shelter with permanent supportive housing in North Long Beach

• Working to improve air quality and prepare for the effects of climate change by leading the citywide campaign to pass Measure US, an oil production tax measure

• Starting the Office of Equity within the City’s Public Health Department, leading to improved health outcomes and an equitable response to COVID-19

• Supporting youth on their path to college by creating a fund for scholarships and championing the North Long Beach Higher Education Center

• Disrupting the school to prison pipeline by bringing President Obama’s My Brother’s Keeper Initiative to Long Beach and collaborating with the city prosecutor to create the Promising Adults Tomorrow’s Hope (PATH) program that gives young offenders a choice to pursue job training or educational opportunities instead of facing the criminal justice system

• Restoring vital public safety services, such as Paramedic Rescue 12, reducing emergency service response times by three minutes in North Long Beach
